Can You Tell Us About Your Artistic Practice?

My artistic practice dwells on the complexities of immigration and identity through landscapes, nature, and the impermanent markings of maps/borders. I often work with different media formats, adapting to the demands of each project. Whenever budgets are constrained, I revisit core proficiencies like drawing and painting; however—I must confess—large-scale and challenging projects that push me out of my boundaries and force me to explore new platforms are among my favorites to engage in.

Tell Us About A Personal Artistic Project Or Body Of Work That You Are Currently Excited About.

For the past year, I’ve been working on a project I like to call “In Conversation with my Fellows,” which is a large-scale piece formed by printmaking 104 botanical illustrations (31 x 33 in.). Each piece explores the flora and fauna that grows on the southern border of the United States. Each print is accompanied by a quote that I’ve recorded from conversations with individuals from Latin America who have also migrated to the United States. I am particularly interested in their emotions—linked with their final decision to stay here—and how this has influenced them throughout different stages. I envision this work as 104-posters that, in being hung together, become one piece. I’m excited to see the final result in an exhibition space.

Tell Us About How You Have Developed As An Artist Since You Began Working At Bakehouse.

Bakehouse has been a phenomenal incubator for my artistic growth. Its collaborative spirit is contagious. Everyone’s open to sharing ideas and encouraging each other creatively. Conversations with such talented peers are invaluable for any artistic evolution. I feel incredibly grateful for this supportive community and space. Our diverse backgrounds fuel a shared passion for creation. It can feel daunting at times, but it is great to be in a place where we are always there to help each other’s artistic journeys.
