As we begin the new New Year, Bakehouse is thrilled to introduce our newest Board Member, Rodolphe “Rudy” el-Khoury. Rudy is a scholar and expert on smart design and architecture who believes that “embedded technology empowers networked environments to better address the environmental and social challenges we face today.”

Trained as both a historian and an architect, Rudy is Dean of the University of Miami (UM) School of Architecture, Director of the Smart Cities program at the university’s Institute for Data Science and Computing (iDSC), Director of RAD Lab–a research unit dedicated to embedded technology, and Interim Director of UM’s Climate Resilience Academy. He was a Canada Research Chair at the University of Toronto, Head of Architecture at California College of the Arts, and Associate Professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design. As a practicing partner in Khoury Levit Fong (KLF), his award-winning projects include Beirut Martyrs’ Square, Stratford Market Square, and the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art. His scholarly work has touched upon a number of subjects, including eighteenth-century European architecture, contemporary architecture and urbanism, the “Internet of Things,” and the importance of connectivity. Articles on his projects and research have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star and WIRED Magazine. In 2013, Rudy presented, Designing for the Internet of Things, for TEDxToronto which has been viewed more than 80,000 times.

As many friends and supporters know, Bakehouse is hard at work on a new campus intended to propel our organization well into the 21st century, which is why we are so excited to have Rudy join our Board. His combined expertise and current research–specifically the application of information technology in buildings, cities, and responsive environments—make him a perfect match for helping us accomplish the work ahead.

“Bakehouse occupies an increasingly singular node in Miami’s artistic ecosystem,” says Rodolphe, “one which is primed to support the next generation of artistic excellence through its future urban campus project and programmatic ambitions. I am proud to join Bakehouse’s engaged Board of Directors as a steward of smart design and architecture and help ensure artists have the tools they need to compete for new opportunities and connect with others on a global scale. I also look forward to exploring new synergies between Bakehouse and our students, faculty, and cutting-edge research facilities at the University of Miami.”

Rudy brings to Bakehouse an optimistic and practical perspective toward tackling the biggest issues of our time and community.
