BAKEHOUSE ART COMPLEX ANNOUNCES FIFTH EDITION OF SUMMER OPEN

A cohort of Miami-based artists will be selected from an open call to receive free communal workspace for twelve weeks

Bakehouse Art Complex is pleased to announce the fifth edition of Summer Open, a program dedicated to supporting Miami-based artists by providing free communal workspace to support their practices. For twelve weeks beginning on Monday, June 16, 2025, selected artists will have access to Bakehouse’s facilities and an opportunity to foster relationships and engage with the organization’s community of artists.

Participants will be utilizing the organization’s largest exhibition space, the Audrey Love Gallery, as a communal studio and will have full access to shared artmaking facilities, which include a ceramics room and kilns, darkroom, digital print lab, print room, as well as woodworking and welding areas. The program will also offer opportunities for creative and professional development through studio visits, networking events, and more.

Artists and creatives working in any medium and based in Miami-Dade County are eligible to apply. There is no application fee and the program is free for those invited to attend. While there are no specific program requirements, selected artists must be able to demonstrate artistic merit, a need for workspace, an ability to utilize the communal studio for the full twelve-week period, and an interest in engaging with their cohort and the broader Bakehouse community.

The return of Summer Open marks a significant milestone for Bakehouse. The program was temporarily paused due to critical infrastructure repairs and construction that limited access to key spaces, including the Audrey Love Gallery. With construction now complete, Bakehouse is excited to reintroduce this vital initiative to support Miami’s artistic community.

Summer Open was initially conceived as a way for Bakehouse to maximize the use of its 2.3-acre campus by addressing the scarcity of free studio space in Miami. The initiative expands on the organization’s mission to address the need for affordable workspace for artists in Miami’s urban core. Launched in 2020, the inaugural program welcomed twelve painters and two-dimensional artists to a socially distanced communal studio environment. Since then, the initiative has expanded to include artists working across all mediums.

The applications open and will be made available on Monday, March 17, 2026.

Summer Open Info Session

Prospective applicants are invited to attend the Summer Open Info Session on Tuesday, April 1 at 6:00 pm, hosted by Bakehouse staff member Krys Ortega, Community Partnerships + Public Programs Coordinator, along with Summer Open alumna and current studio resident Shawna Moulton.

This virtual session will provide an overview of the program and address questions related to Summer Open.

As a Summer Open resident, I had access to a dedicated workspace and Bakehouse’s shared art-making facilities, which enabled me to create new work. At the same time, I built a meaningful community alongside my fellow summer residents. By the end of the residency, I had completed a body of work, laid the groundwork for new projects, formed lasting connections, and gained a deeper understanding of my practice that continues to evolve today.
